On Netflix's Q2 2025 earnings call, co-CEO Ted Sarandos said the Argentine series El Eternauta contains a VFX sequence made with AI tools, in which a building in Buenos Aires collapses. It was the first time generative AI produced final footage in a Netflix original.
What they built
Netflix's Eyeline team (part of Scanline VFX) worked with the show's creative team to make the collapse sequence with AI-powered VFX tools alongside virtual production, instead of with traditional VFX workflows.
The result
The sequence was finished 10 times faster than with traditional VFX tools, and according to Sarandos the cost would not otherwise have been feasible on the show's budget (self-reported).
