The Capital Region and Region Zealand are rolling out an AI algorithm that analyses X-rays for suspected fractures in emergency departments and urgent care clinics. It lets nurse practitioners and junior doctors decide more often on their own whether a patient can go home.
What they built
An AI algorithm, tested on 3,000 earlier fracture cases, gives decision support on X-rays of suspected fractures at emergency units including Nordsjællands Hospital, Hvidovre, Glostrup, Herlev, Gentofte, Bispebjerg, Frederiksberg, Amager and Bornholm. It does not replace clinical judgement, and images are still reviewed at a fracture conference, usually the next day. The rollout received 9.3 million DKK from the Danish Agency for Digital Government, with 13.1 million DKK in regional co-funding.
The result
The algorithm agreed with the radiology report in 9 out of 10 cases. The two regions performed 191,000 suspected-fracture examinations in 2025, and six out of ten patients have no fracture. A similar solution in Region North Jutland cut average waiting time in emergency departments by one hour.
