Which AI platform should we use? That is the question I get most often from clients, and the honest answer depends on what you need it for. Here is how ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini and Mistral compare on strengths, weaknesses, pricing and security.

The four platforms

ChatGPT

OpenAI launched ChatGPT in 2022, and it is still the platform most people mean when they say "AI". It handles natural language well, connects to hundreds of plugins, works with images and audio, can browse the web, and writes solid code.

Claude

Claude comes from Anthropic and is built around what they call Constitutional AI, a set of principles trained into the model's behavior. It is strong at coding and reasoning, and the context window takes up to 200,000 tokens. That is enough to feed it an entire codebase or a long contract in one go.

Google Gemini

Gemini builds on Google's decades of work with search and data. Its multimodal understanding is native rather than bolted on, it plugs directly into Google's own services, and it has access to real-time data. The models come in sizes from small and cheap to large and capable.

Mistral

Mistral AI is the open source option, with a focus on transparency, efficiency and customization. The models run cheaply, and they handle multiple languages better than most.

Who wins at what

Coding: Claude. Claude 3.5 Sonnet consistently beats the others in systematic evaluations.

Creative writing: ChatGPT. It is the strongest at storytelling, brainstorming and text that needs to hold a reader's attention.

Data analysis and research: Gemini. Analytical tasks are where it shows its strength.

Multilingual work: Mistral. It dominates when the job spans several languages.
