OpenClaw started a chain reaction in AI agents

OpenClaw kicked off a chain reaction. Claude Code, Claude Max, Lindy AI, and computer use agents followed. Here is what that means for your business.
OpenClaw landed in January 2026. An open-source project that let anyone run an AI agent that never sleeps. It went viral in a week, and it started a chain reaction we are still feeling.
Not because OpenClaw was perfect. It wasn't. There were security holes, and it was mostly built as a personal AGI agent. But it proved something important: we can now build AI agents that do actual work. Work, not answers.
What has happened since has gone past what I expected.
OpenClaw opened the door
OpenClaw showed what an always-on AI agent can do. You give it a task, it solves it. You give it a plan, it executes. In practical terms it is close to AGI, because the agent handles complex, connected tasks without constant supervision.
The problem with OpenClaw was, and is, security. Researchers documented prompt-based malware attacks and data leaks through fake skills; it was the wild west of the agent era. But the concept was proven. There was no taking it back.
Anthropic responded by upgrading Claude Code with scheduled tasks, remote control, and multi-step workflows. All with the security the open-source version lacked. It went from prototype to production system.
An explosion of agents
The past few weeks have moved fast. We now have:
Claude Code with the Cowork feature, which runs tasks autonomously in the background. You can set it to do research, clean data, or build reports while you sleep.
The Claude Max subscription, which covers all of this for a fixed price. For an IT department that is $100 a month. $100 for a full set of AI agents that can handle a large share of the daily work.
Perplexity has launched its own agents. Lindy AI lets you build agent teams without code. Computer use agents can now control your computer directly and work inside the programs you already use.
VS Code supports Agent Skills, so developers can package specialized agents as extensions. Apple has added Claude Agent directly into Xcode 26.3. It is everywhere.
According to Anthropic's Agentic Coding Trends Report from 2026, one company reached 89% AI adoption with over 800 internal agents handling everything from prototyping to daily operations. Getting there took them weeks, not months.
Build the agent you need
This is the part that changes things. You can build exactly the agent you are missing. Not a generic chatbot. A specialist.
Take product photography. You could build an agent from a set of skills:
An analysis skill that studies your competitors' product images. What do they do? What style do they use? What performs best?
An image skill that connects to Nanobanana Pro, Flux, or whichever image model fits. The agent can pick the model that suits your industry on its own.
A copy skill that adds text to the images. A video skill that turns the finished images into short product videos or ads.
Each skill is a layer. You add them as needed. The result is an agent that takes a raw product and delivers finished marketing material, and you never open Photoshop.
The same principle applies to any process. Customer service. Reporting. Procurement. Quality control. You pick the process, break it into skills, and build an agent that handles it.
It doesn't have to be intimidating
I know a terminal can look intimidating. And yes, Claude Code runs in one. Two things are worth knowing.
First: you can build a UI layer on top. A simple interface that lets an employee use the agent's skills without ever seeing the terminal. They press a button, pick a task, and the agent runs. Nothing under the hood changes. You can do that today.
Second: Agent Skills are designed to be shared. You share a skill the way you share a document. No coding needed to use one. Only to build one.
There is a real need for tools tailored to one person or one department, because every department is different. Marketing needs something different from finance. Sales needs something different from logistics. It depends on industry, size, and how the work flows. That is exactly what these agents solve. You build them for your specific need.
The gap is closed
For a long time there was a wide gap between what people think AI can do and what it actually can. Business owners hear about AI automation and think "that's probably not for us yet" or "that must take a whole dev department."
That gap closed. First OpenClaw proved the concept. Then Claude Code and the other agents that have shown up over the past weeks.
The market for AI agents is growing around 46% a year and is expected to pass 50 billion dollars by 2030. Over 40% of companies are expected to use AI agents for core processes by the end of 2026. Not future plans. Happening now.
And at $100 a month for Claude Max, price is not the barrier. An IT department can get a complete set of AI agents for less than the cost of a single software license.
What it means for you
If you run a business and you are not already looking at this, my advice is simple: start today. The time you spend setting it up now comes back within the first week, and the agent gets better the more you use it.
Find a process that takes too long. Break it into steps. Build an agent with a skill for each step. Test it, adjust it, then build the next one.
This is the biggest shift I have seen in AI. Smarter models are one thing. These have hands.
