A founder with about 700 paying customers moved most basic support to AI. Replies got faster, but cancellations rose. A cautionary case about where AI support should hand over to a human.

What they built

An AI first-line support setup that answered most incoming tickets in seconds. Reaching a human was made very hard; one customer typed "I need to speak to a person" four times and never got one. After reviewing the churned accounts, he restricted the AI to routine questions (password resets, invoices, basic setup) and is adding fast handoff to a person when a customer is stuck or upset.

The result

Self-reported: 56 customers cancelled after interacting with support. 31 of them complained about support or clearly did not get their issue solved. Replies went from 1-2 hours to seconds.
