# Perplexity in 2026: the answer engine, the Comet browser, and whether it is worth paying for

> **Key takeaway:** As of August 2026 Perplexity handles over a billion queries a month, is valued around $20 billion, and shipped a free Comet browser that hit the top of the App Store in March 2026. It wins on sourced, current answers; ChatGPT still wins on creative work. Start on the free plan and see whether cited answers change how you research.

Perplexity now handles over a billion queries a month and ships a free browser. What it does differently from Google and ChatGPT in August 2026, what it costs, and who should use it.

Perplexity started as the search engine that answered instead of linking. In 2026 it is a company valued around $20 billion, handling well over a billion queries a month, with its own browser. Here is what it does differently, what it costs, and whether it earns a place in your toolbox.

## Answers with sources, still the core

You ask a question in plain language. Perplexity searches the web in real time and returns one coherent answer with numbered citations, so every claim can be checked. That was the original idea, and it is still the reason to use it: current information, sourced.

The 2026 additions are Pro Search for deeper research, Spaces for organising work, and Model Council, which runs the same question through several models and shows the answers side by side. For anyone who has caught a single model being confidently wrong, that last one is the most useful feature they have shipped.

## Comet: the browser

In March 2026 Perplexity released Comet, a free browser with the assistant built into every page. It reached number three on the US App Store within 48 hours of the iOS launch. The pitch is that the assistant reads what you are reading, so you ask about the page instead of copying it into a chat. Comet Plus, at $5 a month, adds premium publisher content.

## The numbers

- Over 100 million monthly active users across products, by Perplexity's own count; independent estimates are lower, around 45 million as of March 2026.
- 1.2 to 1.5 billion queries a month by mid-2026.
- Roughly $200 million ARR by late 2025, a $20-21 billion valuation in early 2026.

## Pricing, August 2026

- Free: limited Pro searches per day, the full Comet browser.
- Pro: $20 a month ($16.67 annually). Unlimited Pro searches, model choice, file upload.
- Max: $200 a month. Everything in Pro plus the heaviest models and Labs.
- Enterprise: from $40 per seat.

## Where it wins and where it loses

Against Google: direct, sourced answers instead of links, and no ad-driven tracking of your searches. Google's AI Mode has narrowed the gap, but Perplexity's citations are still cleaner.

Against ChatGPT: ChatGPT wins on creative work and long conversations. Perplexity wins on freshness and on showing its sources.

Against Claude: Claude for depth and long documents. Perplexity when you need a fact, now, with a reference.

The weaknesses have not changed: it still hallucinates occasionally, the answers are only as good as the sources it finds, and the advanced features take time to learn.

## Is it worth it?

For anyone who researches for a living (analysts, journalists, consultants, students), yes. Start on the free plan and install Comet. If you find yourself checking the citations instead of trusting the answer, that habit alone is worth the price of Pro.
