The four platforms compared as of August 2026: what each does best, subscription and API prices per million tokens, and how they handle your data under GDPR. Which AI platform should we use? It is still the question I get most often from clients, and the honest answer still depends on the job. Here is how ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini and Mistral compare in August 2026 on strengths, pricing and data handling. The model names will change again within months; the pattern of who is good at what has been stable for a year. ## The four platforms **ChatGPT (OpenAI).** Still the platform most people mean when they say AI. The GPT-5 family covers text, images, voice, browsing and agents, and the ecosystem of integrations is the largest. Strongest at creative writing, general knowledge work and anything where breadth matters. **Claude (Anthropic).** The Claude 4 series is the developer favourite. Claude Code, its agentic coding tool, passed $2.5 billion in annual revenue in early 2026 and runs a large share of pull requests at companies like Spotify. Context windows up to one million tokens, held at a flat price. Strongest at coding, long documents and multi-step agent work. **Gemini (Google).** Gemini 3.1 Pro is the cheapest flagship API on the market and plugs directly into Google Workspace, Search and YouTube. Natively multimodal. Strongest at data analysis, research with live information, and anything already living in Google's tools. **Mistral (France).** The European option. Open-weight models, EU hosting, and the clearest GDPR story of the four. Mistral Small 4 is among the cheapest capable models available. Strongest at multilingual work, on-premise deployment, and any use case where data residency decides the vendor. ## Who wins at what - Coding and agents: Claude. - Creative writing and general assistant work: ChatGPT. - Data analysis, research and Google integration: Gemini. - Multilingual, self-hosted and GDPR-sensitive work: Mistral. ## Pricing Consumer subscriptions are all around $20 a month: ChatGPT Plus $20, Claude Pro $20, Google AI Pro $19.99, Mistral Pro under $15. That is not where the difference is. The APIs are where the money moves. Per million tokens, input/output, August 2026: - Gemini 3.1 Pro: $2 / $12 (doubles past 200k context) - Claude Opus: $5 / $25 (flat across the full 1M window) - GPT-5 flagship: roughly $5 / $30 for the top model, cheaper tiers below - Mistral Small 4: $0.15 / $0.60 - Gemini 3 Flash: $0.50 / $3 The spread between the cheapest and the most expensive capable model is more than 10x. At the volumes a document pipeline or a support agent runs at, that gap decides the choice, not the benchmark scores. ## Security and data - ChatGPT: enterprise and API traffic is not used for training by default; consumer chats are unless you opt out. US-hosted. - Claude: no training on API or business data by default, strong safety guardrails, US-hosted with EU data-processing terms available. - Gemini: same split as ChatGPT between consumer and enterprise; Google's broader data collection is the concern clients raise most. - Mistral: EU-hosted, open weights you can run yourself, the simplest GDPR conversation of the four. ## What I tell clients Most companies end up with two: one flagship for quality (Claude or ChatGPT), one cheap model for volume (Gemini Flash, Mistral Small or DeepSeek). Build so the model can be swapped. The vendor that is best today has changed three times in eighteen months and will change again. *Updated August 2026.
